Documentary : "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" by Dr. Lustig

By sulthan on Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Robert H. Lustig, MD  - Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, in the Division of Endocrinology Director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) Program at UCSF

Dr. Robert Lustig lectures on the perils of sugar, Fructose in particular. He talks about how obesity has risen at the same time as fat consumption has decreased, how soft drinks and the invention of High-Fructose Corn Syrop are two of the larger culprits and the biochemistry of Fructose.

Cliffnotes:
* We are eating more calories than before. This wouldn’t happen if the brain were suppressing your appetite properly. The suppressor is being circumvented.
* Coca Cola uses sugar to hide how much salt it contains. The salt is there to make you thirsty again.
* All countries that have adopted the US diet are having the same problems with obesity, heart disease and diabetes.
* Up to 30% of Fructose is metabolized into fat. A low-fat high-Fructose diet isn’t really low-fat.
* Fat consumption has reduced by 25% in the last three decades. At the same time obesity has increased.

Best Weight-Loss Advice in 2011

By sulthan on Friday, December 23, 2011

Studies show a direct link between vitamin D deficiency and obesity. Although it is not fully known why, people with a deficiency in this vitamin tend to have much more body fat than those who are not deficient.
Due to digestion difficulties, many people are unable to absorb vitamin D. This deficiency is causing increased risk of death from heart disease, loss of memory in older people, severe asthma in children and cancer. It is possible that vitamin D can help prevent or treat types 1 and 2 diabetes, glucose intolerance and multiple sclerosis.

After eating a meal, drinking four to six ounces of dark wine - a blackberry Merlot is excellent - helps the body digest the meal, break down the foods so the body can absorb the nutrients and helps speed the waste on its way out of the body. Wine cuts the risk of heart attack, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, slows the decline of cognitive function and colon cancer by 45 percent.

Pair the vitamin D3 supplement - have a blood test done to determine how many units your body will need - with the wine. It is possible to lose five pounds a week until ultimate body weight is achieved.

Adding a fresh apple to the diet could add another pound or two of weight lost when eaten daily.

Bottom line: Get tested for vitamin D deficiency. Take a supplement of 2,00 to 8,000 units daily. Drink four to six ounces of Wine after lunch  (where permitted ) and after dinner. Make an Apple part of the daily lunch or afternoon snack.

In U.S., Obesity Afflicts Even Some of the Tiniest Tots

By sulthan on Sunday, January 2, 2011

American kids are becoming obese, or nearly so, at an increasingly young age, with about one-third of them falling into that category by the time they're 9 months old, researchers have found. There are some caveats about the research, however. The infants were not studied recently: They were born about a decade ago. And it's not clear how excess weight in babies may affect their health later in their lives. The study found no guarantee that a baby who's overweight at 9 months will stay flabby when his or her second birthday rolls around.

Still, the study in the January-February 2011 issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion does present a picture of babies and infants who are carrying around a lot of extra weight. The findings also suggest that small changes in an infant's diet can make a big difference, said Dr. Wendy Slusser, medical director of a children's weight program at Mattel Children's Hospital at the University of California, Los Angeles. For example, she said, "if you don't give your kid juice and have them eat the fruit instead, suddenly there's 150 calories less a day that can make a big difference in weight gain over a long term."

The researchers examined federal data about 16,400 children in the United States who were born in 2001. After adjusting the statistics so they wouldn't be thrown off by such factors as high numbers of certain kinds of kids, the study authors found that 17 percent of 9-month-olds were obese and 15 percent were at risk for obesity, for a total of 32 percent. At two years, 21 percent were obese and 14 percent were at risk of becoming obese, the investigators found.
